"The Black Heads had a monumental bone
structure. I needed to draw them on larger paper that I put on the wall. I asked the models to take difficult poses with their heads back, so I could see them from different angles. I had them take a lot of breaks, so they wouldn’t be hurt. It took
four hours to do each one. I had seen large African Heads in the Brooklyn Museum. The
grandiose quality of the museum has inspired me. I hope my interpretations would give others the large feeling that I got from them."
