Robert Stivers at Messineo Wyman Projects

Exhibition Dates: September 13-October 20, 2000
Reception September 13, 7-9pm

Messineo Wyman Projects is pleased to announce our Inaugural Exhibition: Robert Stivers: Color Photography and Other Works. The works will be on view in a unique salon style setting at 525 West 22nd Street, Suite 5D on Wednesday through Friday afternoons from 12-6pm, and by appointment. The exhibition coincides with the publication of Mr. Stivers' second book, Listening to Cement (Arena Editions).

Included in his first color exhibition in New York are large scale Fujiflex Crystal Archive C-prints, and a selection of uniquely toned Gelatin Silver Prints. Formally a dancer, Stivers brings a dancer's sense of space and movement to his photographs, as well as a sense of performance in each shot. Blurred or eerily frozen, his images of people, places and objects encourage viewers to bring their own imaginations to his work. According to Stivers, "I believe it is the true nature of photography not necessarily to document, but to alter or transform the scene or event - whether contrived or not - into a personal, alternate reality". This body of work exemplifies Mr. Stivers' highly self-referential style as he continues to manipulate images through a variety of photographic techniques, all the while achieving mystery and ambiguity.

Robert Stivers has shown extensively throughout the United States and Europe. His work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among other public and private collections.

Please also note that concurrently with Color Photography and Other Works, Throckmorton Fine Art at 153 East 61 Street will be exhibiting the works from the monograph entitled
Listening to Cement.
