Messineo Art Projects and Wyman Contemporary are pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by Antonio Carreno.

In this series of paintings Antonio Carreno continues his pursuit of psychic improvisations as a source of images. Each painting strives to re-interpret the world of objects in terms of abstract relationships. The artist no longer works with finished forms found in nature. He prefers line, color, and planes; formal elements that constitute his field of action.

Carreno’s paintings possess an extraordinary evocative power; he organizes his colors in accordance with their autonomous impulses. Colors are ordered in complementary harmonies and chromatic passages, interwoven, so the surface acquires an independent tension. Space is created solely by color relationships, as in “Sariums, 2010,”where organic, unintentional grids appear as an animated surface relief. In these paintings Mr. Carreno adapts the Cubists principles of autonomous pictorial structure to the requirements of color. The colors modulate a fully consonant harmony; free, supple, sensuous and rich. The usual outlined emblems, loops, dots, and circles practically disappear.

Carreno’s alignment with the “Surrealists’ Aesthetics” is evident in his determination to make visible the treasury of images stored in his unconscious. Clearly, this realm of the unexpected and accidental provides a bridge to his inner world.

Antonio Carreno was born in Santo Domingo in 1963. He graduated in 1982 with a B.A. from The National School of Fine Arts, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Mr. Carreno’s work is included in the following collections:
